SPOC Basketball is proud to be entering its 25th season!  Following our lower than expected player numbers last season we have been actively encouraging players from the past to rejoin in 2017. Our first successful promotion was in conjunction with the Old Scholars' Association who coordinated a Year 12 Leavers BBQ held for outgoing students at the School on October the 24th. With the help of Andrew Gibbons, Lachlan Frost and Toby Yeo we had 17 prospective players express interest in playing Old Collegians' Basketball in 2017.

Due to the number of Public Holidays in April, (Easter, Anzac Day and school holidays,) the South Australian Church Basketball Association decided to start the season later than normal this year. With this in mind we arranged for our first training session to be on Tuesday 4th April in the Burchnall Sports Centre.  As a result of our good pre-season promotional work we were thrilled to have 39 players turn up – 24 from last season, and 15 either new or former players, including 3 new players from the 2016 cohort.

"Bobo" Sainsbury is Captain/Coach of our club again this year and he ran the first noisy training session – what a great atmosphere!  Due to increased player numbers we have to procure around a dozen new uniforms, which is a great problem to have!  Considering that last season we regrettably had to reduce our numbers for the first time for 20 years from 5 teams to 4, this season's renewed enthusiasm indicates that we will have a minimum of 5, possibly 6 teams.  This is a terrific sign for the future of the SPOC Basketball Club.  Of course, with extra teams comes a greater need for more scorers.  If you know of anyone who would like to get involved, please contact me.

P.S.  As of Tuesday 18 April we have completed 3 training sessions.  So far we have had an amazing total number of 54 different players join us, averaging 38 per session. Fortunately we have been able to use both courts for part of the training  time. For the first time in our 25 year history we have 6 teams competing in the league! GO SPOC BASKETBALL CLUB!
