We were off to a flying start for the 2020 winter season following on from our all-time record season in 2019. I contacted around 80 past players & scorers plus the 13 2019 year 12 leavers who indicated they wanted to join us this season. There was a fantastic response with most of last year’s players keen to get back on the court again and hunt down more silverware for SPOC Basketball.

Team nominations were extended until the 5 March for a 16 round season due to start on the 2 May with finals to finish mid-September. Off the back of last year’s success, I nominated 7 teams in SAABL (2 x Div 1, 1 x Div 2, 2 x Div 3 and 2 x Div 4).

Training was booked in to begin on Tuesday 31 March in the School sports centre giving us five sessions before the first game to get our teams sorted out. All good to this point – then the COVID-19 outbreak took everyone by surprise and caused numerous cancellations. Basketball in SA is now on hold until mid-May, however this will probably be extended due to health and safety concerns.

Currently we cannot use the School sports centre until at least the 28 April. I am awaiting a decision from the SAABL Board on a proposal for this season which could be shortened similar to the AFL or maybe cancelled altogether?? This is extremely frustrating for all concerned not helped by the need to play our games inside. I will pass on any news from SAABL (good or bad) as soon as I know more.

In the meantime, wash your hands and stay fit, ready to play as soon as we get the green light.
