Old Scholars Intercol Bowls Match

The annual Old Collegians' Bowls Match against PAOC was held at the Adelaide Bowling Club on February 15th 2018. The weather was perfect, the greens in great condition, and we were treated to much merriment and fireworks from the Adelaide Fringe opening next door.

Despite winning four of the eight games played, we went down by 22 shots overall and once again PAC have claimed the shield.  It was still a admirable effort as we did have six late withdrawals in the three days leading up to the match.

This Intercol bowls competition commenced way back in 1928. PAOC dominated the early years and if you are able to study the shield, it's obvious the Reds have had us covered for most of last century. Yes, we did win every now and then but it wasn't until the 1990's that we became very competitive!

I would encourage any old scholar who plays bowls and is not a regular at this event, to make themselves available.  It would be great to have our younger old boys take part in the competition too, whether they play bowls or not. It is perfectly feasible that we can match them up against younger ones from PAOC.

I would like to extend thanks to Brian Gum (DAC '52) and his wife Betty for convening the match for more than two decades. They both put so much work into the job and our sincere thanks go to them both.

We all look forward to next February, when we battle the Reds for the H E Lucy shield again.
